Several nuances need to be considered with poverty data, but for now, let\u2019s stick to an example that concerns only the visualization aspect of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a chart depicting the percentage of the population living in extreme poverty over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/jzXZojHZI4YoymavdZz1SooM2VAqzM0EAQz_NJVhHe4zQ8fgiiCq5o8D222_DXSWJgHGsHSNdoGRnKlR36oUxJSoLNghCxjeOotsiNQjOitgkg6VlFT0WlzoH3EXwhsRz-g4t2mB-TULjGVS4g\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">% of people living in extreme poverty in India<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we can see that the <strong>percentage of people living in extreme poverty<\/strong> in India has been decreasing steadily since 1993 and did a slightly drastic dip between 2009 and 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/mT1Ru86jAKP6KbuHy2iw4nf9yUCB5_M8UGZLaWe7wRka6yQjpnYA7wGwphf5GKZDzOnksZbdcCZQ66d7ex7qD4DX1khhOCPcaJQDaz4zxag2TvPi9PE96z-ZmNUOkxkCWbPsHilTOlzWMXzlAw\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>% of people living in extreme poverty in India between 1990 and 2011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But extreme poverty conditions aren\u2019t the only change that has occurred over the years. The population of India has also changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/Kacrf5h0Mht3PnSziBj9Kb-Kmt-yW3bIbgCpUKtiykAWl8wQ2OEIDTb2LR97LzKwDofNzZHInCgOD4hI1waPryZNOgxgLFY60KCX1qAjEJyFZALj5cCK4Xp-1pz52JBue9HFUaf2dSfxwOE64A\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The population of India in the year <strong>1990<\/strong> was a little less than <strong>88 crores<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>2011<\/strong>, it had reached 1.25 billion or <strong>125 crores<\/strong>. That\u2019s an addition of roughly 37 crore people in just a little over 2 decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Percentages fail to capture this change in the population.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let\u2019s look at the same data but from a different point of view. Instead of considering the percentage of the population that has been living in extreme poverty, let\u2019s consider the <strong>number of people who have been living in extreme poverty.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/ZPcwVlPrGTXGnvJx0yNhmogecXajjdmCf9VgUpdM3LZZ9GB7VBa1b19diBovADGdJTasvMk8TaGCmboUEcJ6ZAAbO86AZ9iGXnZOS3e2GVxO2uIyW_XuhYXV4r4eR7Zo6fpo1y_LcUa9bRZ6ew\"><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Number of people living in extreme poverty in India between 1990 and 2011<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we can see that there wasn\u2019t much of a difference in the number of people living in extreme poverty in 1993 and 2004. There\u2019s a slight decrease between 2004 and 2009 but the most drastic decrease is between 2009 and 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Sg42x6mEggOh6CFaZCr1gEvgEK5SepgzOonVq74XIX8HHIDesVPwUGGw0vlT1JxBtIAdGk2tsbO-n4NDG4Lf64DT71OqIzmDe0ssYgkCjozPgGZF7D-wXGDsuSIzNwuCpLMTfIQVcbE8Of4DfA\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This shows how the same data presented in the same format but with different data points can tell contrasting stories.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"728\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/mZE4uPA6PhEDYrDO_rcWisKRn-NEIAsyeHETH8WL74Odmb5nX0nUvkLkTyWcK1aAU-wwL4k5Mvb5Jn_3Q05E3QSBxkGO2DQSau7qLvNt73kgMso54q1lh1XBIJPyAWG9sTl2fUVduZ8MLUIOag\"><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first chart, the percentage of people living in extreme poverty seemed to be lesser in 2004 because the total population increased but the total number of people living in extreme poverty remained the same. This is why percentages are not always ideal for comparison of part values<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(in this case, people living in extreme poverty) overtime when the total number of the whole value(in this case, the total population of India) has also changed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So once we start working with data and narratives, what are some things that we could keep in mind?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) What\u2019s the narrative? What story do you want to tell?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/zzK2CsMPJa8CndTuhaZc2RyuuYBZGOjNjBt25jfvgmo6V24bYH9K1urk5M3WIzjSq8YCPc7x9pvv2ilsKARNoFxJvKpqt18N9aU53zeRc26Oq6Mcou4qqvYa7ExBVoCI_TrcHYGzPkYiFjh_HQ\"><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objective of data and data visualization is to identify and\/or investigate problems and come up with solutions\u200a\u2014\u200ato drive change. This problem-solving aspect is one major overlap between the fields of design and data. So like any other field in design, the same question would apply to data design as well: <strong>who is the audience for this particular data\/viz and what are they looking for?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the questions that the viewer would have in mind that this data viz is going to answer for them? The answers to this question will help shape the narrative and then design a visual accordingly.&nbsp;This is a screenshot from my phone\u2019s Health app\u200a\u2014\u200ait is showing my sleep statistics for the past month. When I enter this section of the app, the question on my mind is, <strong>\u201chow well have I been sleeping?\u201d<\/strong> The screen answers exactly that question. Allowing me to select different periods helps me track my habits over time and understand myself better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/eyXw7EXf8c6R9IYkWDbKLhytCsEtfsH31q5_KjcGpGRyC4kmOYSIGV3Xv5BDF7mwVlBo10hNaSpOym1B2OoyNg7Xh4pVHVZ7SyywErOyW1uDopi1WAEPYjE6ScfKlAfejDxDnpLU4-emVZ7z7A\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) Work with Realistic Data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As creative practitioners, we often make use of placeholders\u200a\u2014\u200afor text, images, information, etc. But while designing a chart or a graph, consider using realistic data. A varied range of data will show you a better picture: how do extremely small values look on the chart? Do they need annotations? How do big values fit in? Is there enough space for annotations on bigger values?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/JarIhgfASeWGXokWyIUhH7v0IUup-w7qSznWi_eJH7cQyH68zo1J1tc695b_3ThhdypNupQN-xCOtkDspT_DwSYQeTeN9g6yiLZ6XslYOG8ZJ4A3wlubyUujVLBnqki6F1b7Gn3SE3FaYWSz3A\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) Pick the Right Chart Type<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/a1dJKTd_AXcUXwhRiJBhhAe5KBc78wDRdlg07Dq5lLpIqSnKAgFY_Jaqp6KeLYVRmJfv4qOePzl2QuCiCbcLX7qYqlHfBiWC_fOhceJ4dC-AU-TlYlNd3n8QMTRdUYiUbPaMmxhsHIWHa-t9Dg\"><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many many types of charts to pick from\u200a\u2014\u200aall of them seem exciting to work with. But which chart works best for your use case? How many variables does your data have? Are the values parts of a whole? Is the data being compared over time? Is the dataset bringing out a correlation? Does it have a geographical aspect to it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions can help you <strong>pick a chart that is the right fit for your data.<\/strong> You can refer to these websites to help you pick the right format:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.data-to-viz.com\/#explore\">data-to-viz.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.data-to-viz.com\/#explore\">datavizproject.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) Simple, yet Powerful Viz<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Information overload reduces our capacity to function effectively. Inability to comprehend a lot of information at once can lead to poor decision-making or<em> analysis paralysis.<\/em> Data visualization is a weapon against analysis paralysis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if not designed correctly, the visuals could also be a cause of information overload for viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/J8bntV4bEuXr3Cv68WDz8rxSkBUvgy3GUkRG7r6r6RmEpyG6SfI_mw7NvYmevIgvwiHrN_SlP70Kw5BKUNdxD38yJb_jQ7JzWaLLwPWfsY05ki9KRbYbIAD2BOC7iziZsjUWUKED80ZUjvcrXQ\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example from Toptal\u2019s article on Common Data Visualization Mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Alberto Cairo discusses in his essay \u201cGraphics Lies, Misleading Visuals\u201d, too much data and too little data can obscure reality. If the viewer can\u2019t get any insights from the visual easily, then it defeats the purpose of the visual.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5) Allow Comparison<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is easier to understand contrasting perspectives when viewed together. If it seems that a viewer would benefit from comparing two different charts, consider placing them next to each other on your report or dashboard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/ygMiKMR4xZ9wslDO35WwHTwmZ1gtJpGHBVjbu0hoLNqCrg2MpVg72dD6bdjEhUFySSOkgDAz_A6LuHFwOcIfDSPK7agmlI2GKGMdIQlt0usseEt2sIXLteKvaxpuLfSM7a-wTP0pqLzfqxXaKQ\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Image Courtesy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/\">VisualCapitalist.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6) Exploratory Analysis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes it seems like we are working with too many values at once and stumble across the issue of having too many charts that are just <strong>different views of the same dataset. <\/strong>Consider adding some interactivity to your charts. This gives viewers the power to engage with the data as they wish and generate better insights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding features that let viewers pick between different time periods, values, units, etc can help them explore the information better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"317\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/L99e6MebtGpL4Lk_UhbkgjWUNJPUDUJXuwg44r2NBVchn2ExDj23PRvNxWpcvXBODHpHocM9cJi_7ox83HWG8PISl-aSS9b-_PUUZlTQl5c8eNcgNTn-94DxLdJAT_XpH5gv9NwShHXnFOaOqA\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bubble Chart tool by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gapminder.org\/tools\/#$chart-type=bubbles&amp;url=v1\">Gapminder.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we can see in this example, the data is quite complex and each viewer could have different expectations from it. How can shifting perspectives in data visualization change the narrative?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The way data is formatted, such as comparing percentages versus absolute numbers, can tell drastically different stories.
